An access point (Access Point, AP) is a device operating at the second layer of the OSI model and serving as a bridge between a wired local network and wireless Wi-Fi clients. An access point should be distinguished from a router: a router hands out IP addresses, NAT and internet access, while an access point only extends an existing network by adding wireless connections. Modern access points support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) and Wi-Fi 6E standards, 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, allow connecting dozens and hundreds of clients, support VLAN, guest networks, PoE management and centralized control through a controller.

Types and applications

Several types are distinguished by purpose. Home access points — often built into a router, create one network for an apartment. Office access points — mounted on ceilings or walls, powered via PoE, cover a cabinet or floor area; for large premises, networks of several APs with a controller and seamless roaming are built. Outdoor access points — protected from moisture and temperature, used in warehouses, factories and territories. Industrial access points — operate in harsh conditions and support terminal connections. For access control systems, video surveillance and remote access to workstations, Wi-Fi allows connecting devices without running cable, and roaming technologies provide an uninterrupted connection when moving between coverage areas.

How to build a wireless network

Wi-Fi network design starts with a site survey: the area, the number of employees and the devices that need connection are determined. To cover a floor, several access points are usually placed, which connect to a switch over twisted pair with PoE power. Neighboring points are set to different, non-overlapping channels, and fast roaming (802.11r/k/v) is used for seamless transitions between areas so that calls and video conferences do not drop when moving. Security is provided by WPA3 encryption, a separate guest network with client isolation, MAC address filtering and a centralized controller that collects statistics and manages all points. After installation, a coverage survey is performed and placement is adjusted to eliminate “dead zones”.

The number of access points is calculated based on client density and room type: for open space, one point covers a large area; for rooms with partitions, more are needed. The load is assessed in the context of applications: video surveillance and video conferencing take up most of the channel, so dedicated points or separate SSIDs with traffic priority are planned for such systems.
