Passport and visa document reader

A passport and visa document reader is a device that automatically recognizes and verifies identity document data. In banks and at checkpoints, it reads the machine-readable zone of a passport, the photo and security elements.

What is a passport and visa document reader

A passport and visa document reader (MRZ scanner, passport reader) is a device that obtains identity document data, captures its photo and verifies authenticity. The main element is the machine-readable zone (MRZ) of the passport: 1–2 lines of characters in the lower part of the page encoding the full name, date of birth, document number and validity period. The reader recognizes the MRZ with a camera, also captures the entire passport page, extracts the owner's photo and checks security features under different light sources: visible, infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV).

How the reader works

The operation follows the scheme: the owner places the passport in the device tray or holds it in front of the camera, the device captures the image of the page, recognizes the MRZ and photo, and the software extracts the data and transfers it to the banking system or access control system. Security features are checked with IR and UV illumination: for example, the engraving pattern and marks invisible in ordinary light. Payment cards with a chip and contactless passports can be read by the built-in RFID/NFC module. The verification result and data can be displayed to the operator, fill in an application or register a pass in the access control system.

Types of readers

By design there are desktop readers with a passport tray, standalone wall-mounted terminals for checkpoints and mobile options. By function — models with only MRZ and photo recognition, models with verification of security features (IR/UV) and models with a built-in RFID module for contactless passports. The read speed is usually 1–2 seconds, and the software supports more than a hundred types of documents from different countries. There are also readers integrated into cash register and banking workstations, where they automatically fill client data into applications and contracts.

Use in banks and at facilities

In banks, passport readers speed up customer service: data from the MRZ fills in applications automatically, reducing the number of errors. At checkpoints, they register visitors by identity documents, verifying photos and security features, which strengthens physical security. The reader works together with scanners and the access control terminal system, and the data of passers enters the log. For banks, compliance with personal data processing requirements and integration with automated banking systems without manual entry are important.

How to choose a reader

When choosing, the types of documents the organization works with are taken into account: Russian passports, foreign passports, driving licenses and visas. The necessary functions are determined — MRZ recognition, photo capture, verification of IR/UV security features and RFID/NFC support for contactless documents. The reading speed (1–2 seconds), camera resolution and integration with banking systems or access control systems via standard interfaces are important. For banks, compliance with personal data processing requirements and the convenience of the operator's workstation are additionally assessed.
