Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) is a wireless communication technology that allows devices (smartphones, laptops, tablets) to connect to the internet without cables, via radio waves.
Imagine Wi-Fi as an invisible cable that "delivers" the internet from the router to your device. Instead of running wires around the apartment, you just turn on the router — and the internet is available at any point of the home.
How Wi-Fi works
Wi-Fi operates at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies (as well as 6 GHz in Wi-Fi 6E). The router (access point) sends and receives radio signals, and devices with a Wi-Fi adapter pick them up. Data is transmitted in packets, similar to wired internet.
Generations of Wi-Fi
- Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n, 2009): Speed up to 600 Mbit/s, 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies.
- Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac, 2014): Speed up to 3.5 Gbit/s, only 5 GHz.
- Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax, 2020): Speed up to 9.6 Gbit/s, OFDMA technology for efficiency in multi-user environments.
- Wi-Fi 6E (2021): Extension of Wi-Fi 6 to the 6 GHz band — less interference, higher speed.
- Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be, 2024): Speed up to 46 Gbit/s, support for 320 MHz channels.

The main protection protocols: WEP (outdated, hacked in minutes), WPA (outdated), WPA2 (current standard, AES encryption), WPA3 (newest, improved protection against brute force). For home networks, WPA2/WPA3 with a strong password (12+ characters) is recommended.
