A thin client is a device with minimal computing resources that connects to a remote server to work with applications and data in a VDI environment.

A thin client (terminal) is a compact, inexpensive client device with minimal own computing power, designed for connecting to a centralized server infrastructure of virtual desktops (VDI — Virtual Desktop Infrastructure). Advantages of using thin clients over PCs

Using thin clients gives organizations significant advantages. Security: data is not stored on the user's device, so in case of loss, theft or infection of a thin client, confidential information will not be compromised. All data is located in a secure data center, where centralized policies of backup, antivirus protection, encryption and access control are applied. Simplified administration: the system administrator does not need to maintain hundreds of disparate PCs with different configurations — all updates, software installation, policy configuration and troubleshooting are performed centrally on VDI servers. Durability: thin clients have no moving parts (fans, hard disks), which makes them extremely reliable — the average service life is 7-10 years versus 3-5 years for PCs, and the failure rate is 3-5 times lower. Cost-effectiveness: thin clients consume significantly less electricity (5-20 W versus 100-300 W for PCs), which with a fleet of several hundred devices gives significant savings on electricity. Recycling: old thin clients are easier to dispose of due to the absence of toxic components and batteries.

Application scenarios and VDI architecture

Thin clients are optimal for organizing workplaces of employees whose activities are related to work in corporate information systems (ERP, CRM, document flow), call centers, bank branches, medical institutions, training classes, state institutions and production workshops, where protection of equipment from dust and vibrations is required.
