By purpose, routers are divided into several classes. Home and office routers are all-in-one devices: a router, switch, Wi-Fi access point and firewall in one casing. Corporate routers are powerful devices for connecting branches via VPN, supporting multiple providers and quality VoIP and video conferencing. Edge routers are on the edge of a provider network or data center and process large amounts of routing information. Core routers are in the backbone network of internet providers and provide tens and hundreds of gigabits of throughput. Wireless routers are home models with a built-in Wi-Fi 6 access point.

How routing works

Routing is the process of selecting the path for packet transmission. The device determines that the recipient is in another subnet and refers to the routing table — a list of known routes that is formed manually (static routing) or automatically by distance-vector and dynamic routing protocols (RIP, OSPF, BGP). When accessing the internet, the packet is sent by default route to the internet provider's router, which in turn passes it further — to the destination network. In corporate networks, the router additionally performs NAT translation and inter-network filtering, protecting internal devices from direct access from outside.
