Postgres Pro

Postgres Pro is a Russian relational database management system (DBMS) developed on the basis of the freely distributed PostgreSQL DBMS and included in the Unified Register of Russian Software (order of the Ministry of Digital Development). Postgres Pro offers a number of significant improvements compared to the original PostgreSQL, including performance optimization for multiprocessor and multi-core systems, advanced monitoring and diagnostics tools, improved replication and backup mechanisms, as well as built-in support for data encryption, masking of confidential information and certified access differentiation. For Russian organizations, especially those working with state information systems, personal data (152-FZ) and CII facilities, Postgres Pro is the preferred choice due to full legalization of licensing, compliance with import substitution requirements and the availability of official technical support in Russian with a guaranteed SLA level. The Sintezm product of the Fintech company and the SKIF-BP platform successfully work with Postgres Pro as the main DBMS, ensuring high performance and reliability of data storage.

Improvements and differences from standard PostgreSQL

Postgres Pro includes a number of unique extensions and optimizations that are not present in standard PostgreSQL. Pg_probackup — an improved backup tool with support for incremental and differential copies, parallel recovery and copy integrity checking. Pg_repack — table reorganization (elimination of fragmentation, return of unused OS space) without write blocking (without downtime). Pg_pathman — optimization of table partitioning with an improved query planner that supports automatic creation and deletion of partitions. The SQL Diag module — a built-in diagnostic tool for analyzing and optimizing query performance, identifying bottlenecks and recommending index creation. The ZSON extension — column-level data compression, which allows reducing the volume of stored data by 2-4 times without loss of query performance (data is compressed on write and decompressed on read). Built-in support for the MARS protocol (Multi-Access Replication Service) — asynchronous multi-master replication between clusters with automatic conflict detection and resolution. An improved query planner with support for parallel sequential scans, hash joins and aggregations. Hardware acceleration: use of processor SIMD instructions to speed up scanning and compression operations. In terms of security, Postgres Pro supports table-level data encryption (Transparent Data Encryption), masking of confidential data for different user roles, detailed audit of all database operations and integration with external cryptographic information protection tools. For state customers, a certified version of Postgres Pro Enterprise is available, which complies with the FSTEC requirements for DBMS for secure information systems.

Operation and administration of Postgres Pro

Postgres Pro supports all modern SQL standards: SQL:2016, ACID transactions with Read Committed, Repeatable Read and Serializable isolation levels; window functions; common table expressions (WITH RECURSIVE); full-text search with Russian and English morphology; JSON and JSONB documents with indexing (GIN, GiST); geospatial data through the PostGIS extension (support for more than 1000 functions for working with coordinates, routing, zones). Postgres Pro is compatible with all major operating systems, including Russian Astra Linux Special Edition (Smolensk, Orel, Voronezh modes), RED OS, Rosa Linux, ALT Linux, as well as classic Windows Server, RHEL and Debian-compatible Linux distributions. When installing and configuring Postgres Pro for high-load systems (thousands of transactions per second, terabytes of data), it is recommended to involve specialists with experience in query profiling, tuning DBMS kernel parameters (shared_buffers, effective_cache_size, work_mem), configuring streaming and cascading replication, backup with pg_probackup and monitoring with Zabbix/Prometheus. The cost of licensing depends on the edition and the number of processor cores (subscription or one-time). Support is provided in accordance with the SLA: incident response time from 15 minutes to 4 hours depending on criticality, access to a support portal with a knowledge base, updates and fixes, help from engineers in diagnostics and problem solving. For critical systems, the Enterprise edition with an SLA that ensures a recovery time of no more than 1 hour, a personal support manager and quarterly consultations on performance optimization is recommended.
