What is a UPS
An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a hardware device between the network and equipment. UPS units are necessary for servers, storage systems, switches, routers, medical and banking systems, as well as workstations where data loss is critical. Without a UPS, a power failure can cause damage to unsaved data, disk corruption and a sudden stop of business processes.
Types of UPS
By operating technology, three main types are distinguished. Standby (Offline/Standby) — the simplest and cheapest: they switch to batteries only when the mains fails and do not smooth out voltage deviations; suitable for home appliances and peripherals. Line-interactive (Line-Interactive) — equipped with a stabilizer, correct voltage fluctuations and switch to batteries on a complete outage; optimal for office computers, file servers and network equipment. Double conversion (Online/On-Line) — the load is constantly powered from the inverter through batteries, so there is no switching and the voltage is always perfectly stable; used for critical servers, storage systems and data centers.
How to choose a UPS
When choosing, the total equipment capacity is calculated (VA or W) and 20–30% of headroom is added. The required battery runtime is determined: 5–15 minutes is usually enough for a correct shutdown, for longer system support — additional batteries or a diesel generator. The UPS type (Offline for peripherals, Line-Interactive for servers, Online for data centers), hot-swappable batteries, network management (SNMP) and monitoring are taken into account. For server rooms, UPS units are connected to a common power system with a generator and an automatic transfer switch.
UPS maintenance
UPS batteries wear out after 3–5 years, so their resource is monitored by built-in diagnostics and replaced when capacity drops. A scheduled battery test is recommended once a quarter to make sure the switching is correct. The room with a UPS should be clean, dust-free and at normal temperature: overheating accelerates battery degradation. For data centers, N+1 redundancy and SNMP monitoring are used.
