Home networks

Infrastructure

A home network is a local network that unites devices within one house or apartment (computers, smartphones, TVs, printers, smart home components). It allows them to interact with each other and access the internet through a single router.

Imagine that your apartment is a small city, and the devices (phone, laptop, TV) are the residents who can talk to each other and reach the “big world” (the internet) through a common exit — the router. A home network makes this communication possible.

According to statistics, on average more than 10 devices are connected to the internet in one Russian apartment: smartphones, laptops, TVs, tablets, smart speakers, robot vacuum cleaners, security systems. By 2030, this number will grow to 30+ devices per household thanks to the development of the internet of things.

A properly configured home network provides stable internet in all rooms, allows you to exchange files between devices, print on a shared printer and manage your smart home. Read about how wireless technologies in the home work in the article Wireless networks.

What a home network consists of

  • Router: The main node that receives the signal from the provider and distributes it around the house. It is the “brain” of your home network.
  • Devices: Client gadgets that consume and transmit traffic — smartphones, laptops, TVs, tablets, printers, smart speakers.
  • Cables (Ethernet): Used for a stable wired connection of stationary devices (PCs, TVs, game consoles).
  • Access points: Additional devices for expanding the Wi-Fi coverage area in large apartments or houses.
  • Network switches: Used to connect several wired devices to one router port.

Ways to connect devices

1. Wired network (Ethernet/LAN)

Devices are connected to the router with a twisted-pair cable (RJ-45). Provides maximum speed and reliability without delays. Ideal for Smart TVs, desktop PCs and game consoles for which connection stability matters.

2. Wireless network (Wi-Fi)

Devices connect to the router over radio waves. Convenient for mobile devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops), allowing free movement around the home. Modern Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 standards provide high speed and stability.

3. Hybrid network

A combination of wired and wireless connections. Stationary devices — via cable, mobile ones — via Wi-Fi. This is the optimal option for most modern homes.

Main functions of a home network

  • Internet access: Providing simultaneous access to the global network for all home devices.
  • Data exchange: Direct transfer of files, photos or videos between computers, phones and media servers within the home.
  • Shared resources: The ability to print documents on one printer from different devices, access to shared folders with files.
  • Smart home: Managing lighting, cameras, climate and household appliances through a single center.
  • Media server: Watching movies and listening to music from one device on another (for example, from a computer to a TV).

How to create a home network

1. Connect the router

Connect the cable from the internet provider to the WAN (Internet) port on the router. Turn on the router and wait until all indicators light up.

2. Configure the router

Go to the router's web interface (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1), enter the login and password (usually admin/admin). Configure the internet connection parameters (usually they are automatic — DHCP).

3. Configure Wi-Fi

Set a network name (SSID), choose an encryption type (WPA2 or WPA3), set a strong password. To improve coverage, enable both frequencies — 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

4. Connect devices

Connect stationary devices by cable to the LAN ports of the router. For wireless devices, find your network in the Wi-Fi list, enter the password and connect.

5. Configure sharing (optional)

If you need to exchange files between computers, enable “Network discovery” and “File and Printer Sharing” in the Windows or macOS settings.

Read about how to configure sharing in the article Infrastructure.

Frequently asked questions

What is a home network in simple words?

A home network is the union of all your devices (phone, laptop, TV, printer) into a single network through a router. They can talk to each other and access the internet through one channel. It is like a common house where all residents can talk and go outside through a common door (the router). Read about how wireless networks work in the article Wireless networks.

What does a home network consist of?

The main components: a router (distributes the internet), devices (laptops, phones, TVs), cables for wired connection and access points for expanding Wi-Fi. The router is the “brain” of the network, which manages all traffic and distributes the internet between devices. Read about choosing a router in the article Infrastructure.

How to create a home Wi-Fi network?

Connect the provider's cable to the router, turn it on, go to the settings (192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1), set a network name and password, choose WPA2 or WPA3 encryption. Then connect devices — find the network in the Wi-Fi list and enter the password. The whole process takes 10-15 minutes. Read more about configuration in the article Infrastructure.

How is a home network different from Wi-Fi?

A home network is a general concept that includes all connection methods (wired and wireless). Wi-Fi is only a wireless way to connect to a home network. A home network can be wired (cables), wireless (Wi-Fi) or hybrid. Wi-Fi is a part of a home network.

Can you use a home network without the internet?

Yes, a home network can work without internet access. You can exchange files between computers, print on a shared printer, watch movies from a media server or play local network games. The internet is needed only to reach the global network, but the internal functions of a home network work even without it.

Which provider is best for home internet?

The choice of provider depends on your address. In Moscow and large cities, MTS, Beeline, Rostelecom and Dom.ru are popular. In the regions — local providers. Compare tariffs by speed and price, read neighbors' reviews. The optimal speed for a family of 3-4 people is 100-300 Mbps. Read about choosing a provider in the article Fintech.

How to protect a home Wi-Fi network?

Use a strong password (at least 12 characters, with digits and letters), enable WPA2 or WPA3 encryption, hide the network name (SSID) from outsiders, disable WPS, regularly update the router firmware. You can also set up a guest network for visitors so that they do not have access to your devices. Read about data protection in the article Cloud security.
