Main types of wireless networks

Wireless networks are divided into several types depending on the range and purpose.

1. WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Networks)

The range is up to 10 meters. Used to connect the devices of one user: a smartphone with headphones, a fitness bracelet or smart watches. The main technologies: Bluetooth, ZigBee, NFC, ANT+.

2. WLAN (Wireless Local Area Networks)

The range is from 10 to 100 meters (an apartment, an office, a building floor). Created to unite several computers and gadgets into one local network and provide them with internet access. The main technology is Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11 standards).

3. WMAN (Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks)

The range is up to several tens of kilometers. They unite disparate local networks (WLAN) within one city or district to create a unified corporate or city infrastructure. Technologies: WiMAX, LTE Advanced.

4. WWAN (Wireless Wide Area Networks)

The range is from a city to global coverage of the entire planet. They provide wireless communication over huge distances, including mobile data transmission and satellite internet. Technologies: cellular networks (4G LTE, 5G, 6G), satellite systems (Starlink, Iridium).

Main wireless technologies

1. Wi-Fi

The most popular technology for local networks. Operates at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. Wi-Fi allows many devices to be connected to the internet simultaneously. Modern standards (Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 7) provide speeds of up to 10 Gbps and low latency.

2. Bluetooth

3. Cellular communication (4G LTE, 5G)

Provides mobile internet and voice communication over large territories. 4G LTE provides speeds of up to 100 Mbps, 5G — up to 10 Gbps with low latency. 5G networks are being actively implemented around the world and are the basis for the internet of things and smart cities.

4. Satellite internet

Provides communication in hard-to-reach areas where it is impossible to lay a cable or install a cellular tower. The Starlink (SpaceX) and OneWeb projects provide high-speed internet through satellites in low orbit.

Advantages and disadvantages of wireless networks

Advantages

  • Freedom of movement: You can use the internet at any point of coverage without being tied to a cable.
  • Many devices: Dozens of gadgets can be easily connected to one source (for example, a home router).
  • Availability: The ability to connect where laying a cable is impossible or too expensive.
  • Ease of connection: Adding a new gadget is easier than laying a new cable.

Disadvantages

  • Dependence on distance and obstacles: Walls, furniture and distance from the router reduce the speed and quality of the signal.
  • Interference: Work can be hindered by other electronic devices, baby monitors, microwave ovens or neighbors' networks.
  • Security: A radio signal can be intercepted, so home and corporate networks are protected with passwords and encryption.
  • Speed: A wireless connection can be inferior to a direct cable connection in stability and maximum speed.

How Wi-Fi works at home

In a typical apartment, a wireless network works thanks to a Wi-Fi router. The router receives the internet from the provider via cable and converts it into radio signals. Devices (smartphones, laptops) receive this signal through a built-in antenna (a Wi-Fi adapter) and go online.
