How an NFC reader works

The operating principle of an NFC reader is based on electromagnetic induction:

  1. The reader generates an electromagnetic field at 13.56 MHz.
  2. When an NFC tag or smart card is brought close, the field activates its chip.
  3. The tag receives energy from the reader's field (passive mode) and transmits data.
  4. The reader receives the data and transfers it to the system for processing.

There are also active NFC devices (for example, smartphones) that can operate both in reader mode and in card emulation mode. The data transfer speed in NFC is up to 424 Kbit/s, and the connection establishment time is less than 0.1 seconds.
