5A is a series of asynchronous three-phase electric motors with squirrel-cage rotors, developed for industrial applications and heavy engineering. Motors of the 5A series are used to drive pumps, compressors, fans, pumpjacks at oil fields, as well as other equipment requiring high reliability and a long service life. The series was developed by the All-Union Research, Design and Technological Institute of Electrical Machinery (NIIPTIEM), which is a leading scientific and technical center for the development, research and production of low-voltage asynchronous electric motors with power up to 400 kW .

About the manufacturer of the 5A series

The developer of the 5A electric motor series is PJSC "NIIPTIEM" — formerly the All-Union Research, Design and Technological Institute of Electrical Machinery . The institute is known as a leading scientific and technical center for the development, research and production of low-voltage asynchronous electric motors with power up to 400 kW .

NIIPTIEM has developed a whole range of asynchronous electric motor series: 4A, 4AM, AIR, 5A, 5AM, 6A, 7A and their modifications, which are successfully produced by factories in Russia and CIS countries .

The institute is a major scientific center with a powerful test base that allows testing for compliance with technical requirements and calculated data of electromagnetic and thermal parameters, for resistance to climatic and mechanical influences, for compliance with the degree of protection, etc. The center is accredited in the GOST R system of Russia, the Maritime Register, the Federal Nuclear and Radiation Safety Authority of Russia (Gosatomnadzor), and in the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) system for federal railway transport .

In 2003, NIIPTIEM passed certification under the quality system and received a certificate of conformity GOST R ISO 9001-2001 .

Electric motors developed by NIIPTIEM

The institute develops and manufactures prototype samples and small batches of the following types of special electric motors :

modifications of electric motors of the general industrial series 4A, AIR, 5A, 5AM, 6A, 7AVE in the power range of 0.5–400 kW;
import-substituting electric motors;
wound-rotor motors used when smooth speed control is required, under heavy starting conditions;
electric motors with increased slip, intended for driving mechanisms with pulsating load or operating with frequent starts;
electric motors for driving lifts, intended for operation in intermittent, repeated-short-term duty with frequent starts and electromagnetic braking;
electric motors for driving auxiliary mechanisms of electric locomotives and diesel locomotives, traction motors of urban transport operating under elevated temperatures, vibration, impact loads, etc.;
electric motors for nuclear power plants with high reliability and the ability to withstand the destructive effects of special factors at NPPs;
electric motors in marine design, intended for mechanisms operating on river and sea fleet vessels;
electric motors operating as part of an asynchronous variable-frequency drive with a rotation speed of 1–6000 rpm;
asynchronous motors for drives under elevated ambient temperature conditions .

Electric motors developed and manufactured by NIIPTIEM operate at NPPs in Finland, Cuba, Hungary, Bulgaria and at most domestic NPPs. In recent years, electric motors have been supplied to the Tianwan NPP (PRC), Bushehr (Iran) and Kudankulam (India) .

Main parameters

Electric motors of the 5A series are designed for operation from an alternating current network with a frequency of 50 Hz and a voltage of 380 V. The motors are produced in various frame sizes and with different power characteristics. Technical parameters using the example of 5A motors used to drive pumpjacks at oil fields:

Frame size: from 180 to 250 mm.
Rated power: from 3 to 37 kW.
Rated rotation speed: from 485 to 1500 rpm.
Rated current: from 12.5 to 73 A.
Number of poles: from 2 to 12.
Insulation class: F (heat resistance up to 155°C).
Type of cooling: IC0141 (self-ventilated).
Degree of protection: IP54 (protection against dust and water splashes).
Climatic version: U and UKHL (temperate and cold climates) per GOST 15150.

Modifications and design features

5AM series

The 5AM modification is an improved version of the 5A series motors, developed by NIIPTIEM and produced at factories in Russia and CIS countries . The series includes various modifications: multi-speed, with increased slip, for sea fleet vessels, for driving compressors, for electric locomotives, diesel locomotives and urban electric transport, separator, adjustable, crane, resistant to aggressive environments, and for equipping freight and passenger lifts .

Design for oil fields

5A series motors for driving pumpjacks (designation SN at the end of the marking) are manufactured to special technical requirements for outdoor operation in temperate and cold climates. The design includes built-in temperature protection sensors — posistors of the ST14-2 type with a tripping temperature of 145°C. The bearings allow connection to the driven mechanism via a V-belt drive.

Integrated control systems "Sungir"

At present, NIIPTIEM not only develops and manufactures electric motors, but also creates and modernizes electrical engineering complexes (ETC) and integrated control systems (ICS) "Sungir" .

5A series motors are manufactured by several Russian factories, including the Vladimir Electric Motor Plant (VEMZ), as well as by enterprises in CIS countries under NIIPTIEM technical documentation .
